Yummy Mummies Classes
The idea for these classes came about when I realised women with small children aren’t really catered for exercise wise. If you’re not interested in using childcare, or can’t find a babysitter, chances are you can’t make it to an exercise class.
Enter Yummy Mummies, a class in Fitzroy, Melbourne, where your children are welcome to come and join in, play, sleep, cry - whatever they feel like doing is fine. Since the class started, we’ve had perfectly behaved children, tired children, hungry children … you name it, they’ve done it. One little girl spent the whole class giving my arm a hickey while she waited for her mother to finish exercising and feed her. Luckily everyone in the class is a parent, so there’s no pressure to have a perfectly behaved child.
The classes are specifically designed for post natal women, and focus on exercises which help make you strong enough to deal with the physical challenge of a small child. Most women find their abdominal muscles are weak, especially after a Caesarean, and we use a lot of Pilates techniques in the class to make sure your core is rebuilt into a strong, supportive group of muscles. Body weight exercises, yoga poses and stretches are other areas we cover, as well as breathing and relaxing. Each class is different, and whatever your ability, you’ll make it through to the end feeling like you’ve worked, but still have enough energy to meet the challenges of your day. Most importantly, the classes ensure you progress at the right pace, without any pressure to be perfect straight away.
During my pregnancy, I gained 30kg and had no idea how to get my body back into shape. While the aim of Yummy Mummies classes isn’t weight loss, two of the attendees have lost more than 4kg, thanks to the regime of resistance exercise, a sensible diet and some gentle cardio at home. If you’re feeling like you need some help to get back to your old self, give me a call, and we can discuss how Yummy Mummies classes can help you.
Currently classes run at 10.15am on Thursdays, at Hunt’s Fitness Centre, 41 Johnston Street Fitzroy. If you have a mother’s group, or a small group of friends who are interested in training at another time or venue, let me know, and we’ll see what we can organise.
Pre and post natal personal training is also available, either for thirty or sixty minute sessions if you prefer personal attention or can’t make it to a class.
Here are a couple of comments from regular attendees:
“Before becoming a Yummy Mummy, I was always tired, disgusted by my post-pregnancy bulges and my husband was sick of seeing me in track pants … thanks to Emma, my svelte new shape has heads turning all over the neighbourhood!”
“This workout fitted so well into my weekly schedule because Emma dealt with my baby whatever state she was in!”
